Nerivio remote neuromodulation (REN) device is designed to treat headaches in people with chronic migraines. The device is non-invasive and works via electrical nerve stimulation via the individual’s arm. This action triggers a pain-management response by the brain and works with the body to naturally turn off migraine pain without medications.

Policy Position

When ordered by a licensed clinician, Nerivio may be considered medically necessary for individuals 12 years of age or older when ANY of the following conditions have been met:

  • Individual is in acute onset of migraine headache with or without aura; or
  • Individual has onset of aura associated with migraine headache; or
  • Individual has chronic migraines; or
  • Individual  is utilizing the REN for preventive treatment of migraine;

AND

Individual is experiencing ANY of the following:

  • Adverse effects or non-optimal performance from guideline-directed migraine medication regimen; or
  • Has a medical condition that contraindicates taking migraine medications.

Nerivio not meeting the criteria as indicated in this policy is considered not medically necessary.

Place of Service: Inpatient/Outpatient

Nerivio devices are typically an outpatient procedure which is only eligible for coverage as an inpatient procedure in special circumstances, including, but not limited to, the presence of a co-morbid condition that would require monitoring in a more controlled environment such as the inpatient setting.
